12/29 - Professional triathlete Marcel Vifian will be holding a clinic at Wasatch Running Center this Wednesday, January 3rd at 7:45 pm. Marcel was the 2004 US Long Course National Championships runner-up and in 2002 he was ranked as the #1 pro triathlete. Click here for more information on the clinic.

12/21 - Wasatch Running Center and Revolution Bicycle Shop have partnered to create the Wasatch Revolution Triathlon Team. Members of this exclusive team of 12 men and 12 women will receive a Wasatch Revolution team issue tri race suit, discounts on team apparel and gear/equipment at both stores, race entry reimbursement or comps when applicable or available, and coaching through or paid by sponsors. Interested competitive athletes should email race resumes including the past two tri seasons and 5Kand 10K PRs to irun@wasatchrunningcenter.com.

On another note, we’ve caught wind of a 1/2 Iron distance race in Burley, ID on June 2, 2007. The VikingMan will take place in the Snake River. If you are a lacking in the swim department but would like to do a half or you would like a smoking fast 1/2 Iron swim time to help out the rest of the day this is the race for you. 12/04 - TriUtah’s schedule was released this week. They’ve even gone as far as announcing a 1/2 Iron event in 2008. Speaking of 1/2 Iron events, the Telos 1/2 Iron, previously schedule for 6/16 is now going to be moved to a later date, possibly in August. We’ll post the exact date when it we receive it. Telos has brought aboard Aaron Asay of SBR Tri and Travis Snyder of the Salem Spring Tri to assist in the production of the 1/2 Iron event. Definitely something to look forward to. The season has been laid out. Below is the new schedule.

11/27 - St. George Triathlon opened up registration on Thanksgiving and slots are still available. If you plan on racing in this early season classic sign up now or you may miss out.

11/20 - Thanksgiving is upon us and there are running events to partake of. Check out the calendar at www.saltlakerunningco.com or www.stridersrunning.com.

The Utah triathlon calendar is taking shape. TriUtah is expected to have its calendar up soon. SG Tri goes on sale this Thursday (yes, Thanksgiving Day). We’ll post the race schedule on the new TriHive Web site, to be launched by the New Year. Below an early list of races in 2007.

11/14 - Congrats to Utah finshers of the 70.3 World Championships this past Saturday in Clearwater, Florida. We’ll post the results of Utahn’s as soon as they are available.

The Silverman Triathlon took place on Sunday. Utah had seven athletes in the individual event and several others in the relay. Congrats for sticking it out on what has become the toughest Iron distance event in North America.

11/6 - Quick Update - SG Tri will open registration on Thanksgiving Day. Spudman will open registration on New Years Day.

11/6 - Congrats to Karl Jarvis and Jamie Lambert, winners of Saturday’s Telos Turkey Tri in Orem. Jarvis’ victory is his second Turkey Tri victory in two years. Will he make it three in a row in 07? Picutures are up. See the link to your left.

Former University of Utah Swim Team Coach, Dennis Tesch will be holding a winter swim training series for triathletes. The series begins on October 21 from 7 a.m.-8 a.m. and will continue through every Saturday for 12 weeks. This is the perfect way to work on your freestyle stroke in the off season. 10/08 - The American Fork Splash and Dash went on without a drop of rain. Mike Mamales was the first person to finish and Kim Abbott took home the womens top honors. Click here to see the photo scrapbook from Saturday.

Heath and Mahogani Thurston will be hosting a breast cancer fundraiser 5k this Saturday, October 14 at the Salem Pond. 100% of the proceeds will go towards the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Click here for more information.

10/02 - This weekend is the American Fork Triathlon. The AF Tri is one of two races left for the younger folks. Seniors have the Senior Games Tri to look forward to on the 14th of this month. Don’t let the season end without one last attempt at a personal best!

9/25 - Kokopelli Tri, the final open water race of 2006 wrapped up the SG. Trifecta on Saturday. Randall Olsen and Rachel Cieslewicz won the Olympic event and were overall winners of the SG Trifecta, Olympic distance points series. Cory Johnson and Erika Wilde won the Sprint event. Jess Brereton and Shirley Leydsman were the overall winners of the SG Trifecta, Sprint distance points series.

Remember, we’re not done yet! You can still race the AF Triathlon on October 7th, the Senior Games Tri on October 14th (if you’re of age) or the Telos Turkey Tri on November 11th.

TriHive will be cutting back to one update per-week beginning next week, now that the season has wound down.

9/21 - Kokopelli Tri, the final race of the St. George Trifecta Triathlon Series, takes place this Saturday at Sand Hollow Reservoir in Southern Utah. Best of luck to all racing!

9/16 - What an epic day it was at the Ogden Valley Tri. For those who have not heard, the weather was so cold that it became a duathlon. Sprinters ran 1.8 miles and Olympic racers ran 3.1 miles in place of the swim. According to some athletes who stayed the Friday night in the Pineview area, there was snow on cars in the early morning before the majority of the racers arrived. Hail pelted cyclists as they made their way around Pineview. Congrats to the athletes sticking it out for a unique challenge. Thanks for a great season, Tri Utah!

Do you still want to squeek in one last open water tri before the season ends? You could head down to St. George this weekend for the Kokopelli Tri, the final race in the St. George Trifecta series.

If you enjoy pool Sprint tris, consider capping off 2006 with the American Fork Tri on the 7th of October or the Telos Turkey Tri on the 4th of November.

9/14 - Ogden Valley Triathlon is sold out! Good luck to athletes racing this weekend. Be prepared for cold weather.

9/11 - The Yuba Tri was great! Many thanks to Travis Snyder and Heath Thurston for continuing the legacy of the Yuba venue.

8/28 - A large crowd came out to watch the Jordanelle Triathlon over the weekend. Mike Nordberg and Alli Gardner won the overall Olympic distance race. B.J. Xterra weekend was KILLER. Mike Vine and Melanie McQuaid took the overall PRO men and women classification. Guy Perry was first Utah finisher, coming in 31st overall. Tim Martersteck won the Sport race. Congrats to Guy and Tim! Click here to read the Deseret News article on the race.

8/17 - Xterra fever has taken over! The Nissan Xterra Mountain Championship is just a few days away. Click here for more information on this sweet venue.

The Melanie McQuaid triathlon clinic was very NICE! Many thanks to Melanie, the Biker’s Edge, Transition Tri Club, and Telford Financial for making it happen.

Local triathlete, Brad Gale set the Full Vineman iron distance course on fire. Gale came off the bike leading the race. He finished tenth overall in 10 hours and 18 minutes. Check out the Vineman website for official results. Congrats Brad!

8/14 - Xterra Champion, Melanie McQuaid will be speaking at Biker’s Edge in Kaysville tonight, August 14th at 6:30pm. This is a rare opportunity to visit with a world champion triathlete. 8/10 - Big news day in the Hive. First off, the UtahRunnerTriathlete series is officially cancelled for the summer. Richard Barnum-Reece, owner and director of the series is still recovering from a serious health incident received from participating in a local triathlon. Also on our press release page is information about Park City’s Marcel Vifian and his victory at the Wilkes-Barre Triathlon in Pennsylvania last weekend. Marcel wasn’t the only Utah athlete tearing it up last weekend. Debbie Perry and Dave Ference smoked the course at the Whirlpool Steelhead Triathlon in Michigan. Debbie won her age-group and came in second overall in the women’s race with a time of 4:45:14. Dave was ninth overall and second in his age-group with a finishing time of 4:16:45. There were over 1,400 finishers at this event. Way to represent!

8/7 - The Nissan Xterra Mountain Championships are coming up on the 19th. This should be an outstanding event with a great pro starting line-up. TriHive will be there, we hope to see you at the venue.

7/27 - TriHive has learned that during last week’s triathlon in Scofield, Richard Barnum-Reece suffered health complications while participating in the race. Richard is known by many in the tri community. Our thoughts and prayers are with him.

Utah triathlete, Marcel Vifian placed 2nd overall at the USAT Elite Long Course National Championship in Racine, WI last weekend. This is a tremendous result. Congrats to Marcel! Click here to read more about the event.

7/13 - To all racers of the Xango Echo Triathlon — HAVE FUN and BEST OF LUCK!

Scofield Tri is next on the schedule on July 22nd. There are still some slots available for this race. To learn more about this exciting new venue click here. Packet pick-up and a pre-race pasta dinner will be held Friday night from 5-10 PM. Packet pick-up will continue from 6-8 AM Saturday morning. There will be a mandatory race meeting at 8:30 AM with the Olympic distance starting at 9:00AM. The Sprint, Duathlon and Kids Event will follow the Olympic start. There will be live music and a BBQ from 10-2 with awards at noon.

We are approaching a stretch of 3 high quality events. Kicking things off on July 15 is the Xango Echo Triathlon, followed by a new and improved Scofield Triathlon on July 22. Finally, athletes sneaking into the Spudman will be making the annual pilgrimage to Burley, ID on July 29. Two events remain open (Xango and Scofield) but we know for a fact they are filling quickly.

- Two Utah triathletes have Ironman stories we must share.

Utah’s Tom Thorum snuck under the TriHive radar on May 28 at Ironman Brazil. Thom set the fastest swim time of the day, 44 min and 52 sec in a deep field. We’ve been told this is a new course record for the swim at IM Brazil. Tom finished the race in 9 hours, 45 minutes, and 58 seconds.

 

Sandy City resident, Paula Eldredge was the only Kona qualifying athlete from Utah at last weekends Ironman CDA. Paula finished in 7th place in her division.

6/15 - The Provo Triathlon recently sent the following announcment about Saturday:
” Join us for a pre-race open water swim clinic and our “Clean-up the Beach” project. We will be setting up the swim course for a trial run as well as have the maps for the rest of the course available. If you would like to participate in “Clean-up the beach” arrive early and bring a rake. We will be raking the beach, cleaning off driftwood and removing reeds from the swim exit. Please join us on Saturday June 17, at 5pm, if you want to help clean, 6pm if you just want to swim. Two USAT tri coaches from Elevate Multisport will be there to teach a short race strategy clinic and answer questions. We will meet at Utah Lake State Park in Provo near the southwest boat ramp and the beach.”

6/8 - The Desert Sharks, Saratoga Splash triathlon is sold out….and then some. Over 400 athletes have signed up for this weekend’s race. Feel left out? Then head to West Jordan and participate in the first annual Sunrise Duathlon, presented by the Hess Cancer Foundation. Duathlon is unique to Utah, so don’t miss out on this one-of-a-kind event. “Day of” registration will be available, but get there early.

We failed to mention the solid performance of Ogden’s Joe Anderson at the Honu 70.3 triathlon this past Saturday. Joe finished 2nd in his age group in what was a very tough field. It’s important to note that Joe didn’t start exercising until he was 39. You’re never too old to begin!

Utah’s B.J. Christensen came in 35th place (2nd in his Age Group) in a tough field of athletes at Saturday’s Honu 70.3 triathlon in Kona, Hawaii. B.J. completed the half iron course in 4 hours, 44 minutes, and 55 seconds. Visit Ironman.com for more information on the Honu triathlon.

There is a rumor circulating that Tri Utah’s Ogden Valley Triathlon may be nearing its capacity. We’ll report any official word as we get it. Don’t miss out on this great venue.

As previously mentioned, Yuba Triathlon is back! Visit www.yubatriathlon.com for specific information about the September 9th event. If you are a triathlete on a budget, you’ll appreciate the $35 price tag on the Olympic distance course. According to our research, this is the lowest price for an Oly distance event in the state.

SBR Sports recently received the Korr VO2 Machine and Cardio Coach System. What does this mean? This means that triathletes can determine their anaerobic threshold, resting metabolic rate, and heart rate zones from triathlon coaching professionals. Call Aaron at 801-225-0076 for more information.

Finally, long course junkies will rejoice over the return of the 1/2 Iron distance to Utah. But, you’ll have to wait until June, 2007. We’ll have an announcement on June 19, 2006.

5/25 -High Altitude Multi-Sport with B.J. Christenson will be presenting triathlon clinics for beginner and seasoned athletes. The clinics will take place in Eden with open water swimming in Pine View Reservoir, bike training up by Snow Basin Ski Resort and group runs in Ogden Valley. These two day clinics will prove beneficial for athletes of all abilities and experience. The Beginner’s Clinic will be offered June 16th & 17th and the Advanced Clinic will take place on August 11th & 12th at the Red Moose Lodge. Click here for clinic and registration information.

Dennis Tesch will be running a freestyle clinic this Saturday, 9AM at the Heber city pool. The cost is $5. He will also be video taping swimmers through out the day (10 am to 4 pm) at the pool. For $10 you can have all four strokes video taped underwater followed by an individual critique. Participants will need to bring their own tape (VHS). No need to sign up, just go and participate.

The race will be held on its original date, June 3rd, at the Sand Hollow Aquatic Center , in St. George. The new SBR store is now open. Its new location is 400 North and State Street in Orem. Their new store features 50 new bikes, a triathlon training center, nutrition room, and a clinic room for chiropractic and PT work. The endless pools and compu-trainer theatre will be set up next week. SBR is also putting on an ITU style race on June 24th. Race info will be posted on Active next week.

The word on the street is that Spudman will not offer additional slots for the July event. The Lions Club committee will meet again on February 14 and we should have confirmation either way shortly after. We’ll let you know as soon as we know.

SBR Sports expects to open their new facility at the beginning of March. The Infinite Pools arrive to the shop in just a few weeks. Utah County residents are in for a treat. We’ll have more information as it opens.

2/06 - Salt Lake County finally has a triathlon specific shop. Salt Lake Running & Multisport Company opens in Draper TODAY. We encourage you to get out and visit the new shop located at 1132 E. Draper Parkway, right across from the Treehouse Athletic Club.

The 2006 race schedule is nearly complete. Drafting fans may see an ITU style race on June 24th in Utah County. We’ll have concrete info in the coming weeks. This will give triathlon criminals an opportunity to get their illegal ways into a legal venue! Mr. Drafter, I know your out there. I’ve seen you in Burley.

Hess Cancer Foundation will present the 1st Annual Sunrise Duathlon at Jordan Landing on June 10. See our calendar page for more information.

We recently heard that Spudman MAY open a few additional spots. This depends on the outcome of a Lions Club meeting. We’ll keep you posted as we get information.

Salem Spring Tri director Travis Snyder recently told TriHive that it’s steadily filling. Races are filling quickly this year. I wouldn’t wait to register if you want to race in Utah this summer.

1/26 - Spudman fills in record time. Unreal. SG Tri is on the same track. Over 800 already signed up for the 1,200 max racer event. They expect the race to fill in February. Act now or miss out.
