XTERRA Winter Worlds, A Conversation with Dave Nicholas

Posted on 26 December 2007 by admin

TriHive caught up with Dave Nicholas, senior VP of TEAM Unlimited (aka - XTERRA Triathlon). Dave tells us about the new Winter Worlds race that will break ground on March 8-9 at Snow Basin Ski Resort. Check out www.XterraPlanet.com for more details about the event. See below for our interview with Dave.

Explain Team Unlimited’s ownership of XTERRA.

XTERRA is wholey owned by TEAM Unlimited.

Who is TEAM Unlimited?

TEAM LImited came from two companies; Event Marketing and the Kiely Company. Event marketing was our original event production company that started in 1990. Kiely Company was Tom Kiely’s marketing company. We split Event Marketing into TV production and event production but it became to cumbersome and now everything falls under TEAM Unlimited. Much better.

How/why did TEAM Unlimited started XTERRA?

We had become a fairly major player in mountain bike racing. We were also at the head of the ocean sports field with about half a dozen top competitions. We saw the blend of mountain biking and swimming and running into this newer sport called triathlon. So it made perfect sense to combine what we did into one multi discipline event.

Why winter triathlon?

It was a natural extension of XTERRA. And XTERRA is not winter triathlon. XTERRA is 4 disciplines rather than 3 and only two of our disciplines are the same as winter tri.

How does it differ from the USAT winter series?

At this point it is not a series, it is one race. As stated we do snow running and biking (the same) but we do back country skiing rather than cross country and we have snow show included.

How did you come up with the events in the race?

Winter tri is a heavy on equipment sport. We did not think that running and biking were true winter sports. How many times have you been cycling on packed snow? We thought that snow shoe running was more valid than just running on packed snow for a winter event. We also felt that back country skiing was more valid for multi-sport than was cross country of skate skiing. So If you are bringing all this equipment to do a winter tri- it isn’t that much more difficult to bring snow shoes.

Why winter worlds at Snow Basin?

We have worked with Snowbasin on our Mountain Champs in the summer. They are very professional and skilled folks. There is a good relationship with them and the State of Utah. Frankly it was a no brainer. Why re-invent the wheel. We have a world class resort, we have world class people to work with.

Will Winter Worlds be like the summer event (points series events leading to regionals. Regionals to worlds?) If so, what other events are there?

Too early to tell. We do have interest from several other resorts in the US and from some in Europe.

Who are the athletes that will be racing? Are you aiming for the triathlon crowd, or the Nordic skiing crowd, or the snowshoeing crowd?

All of the above. We surveyed our athletes and found that almost 70% are avid skiers. We also know that many of our top pro’s compete in winter triathlon and/or snow shoe racing. I’m not sure the nordic crowd will compete, but we welcome them to try something a bit more on the edge. Hah, no pun intended, but they will need hard edges on their ski’s to be safe on some of the downhills.

Anything else we should know?

We really do not see ourselves as rebels or counter triathlon. So we are not saying winter tri or nordic or cross country aren’t terrific sports. XTERRA created its own sport by being more fun, less pressure and a bit more testy than on-the-road triathlon. Our athletes don’t mind getting dirty or the occasional crash and burn. We felt that the winter crowd - being essentially the same as our summer folks - would like something similar. So we did some research, asked questions, learned a lot and came up with this format. Time will tell if we did it right or not.

Thanks for your time, Dave!

USA Triathlon Club and Long Course Nationals Headed to Las Vegas

Posted on 18 December 2007 by admin

USA Triathlon 2008 Club National Championship and the USAT Halfmax National Championship (Long Course Championship) are headed to Las Vegas.

The races – taking place in Boulder City, just outside of Las Vegas – are slated for October 18th and are the result of an exciting new three-way partnership between USA Triathlon, BBSC Endurance Sports and Ultramax Events.

“We are very proud and excited to host not only the Club Championship again this year, but the huge addition of the USAT Halfmax National Championship Triathlon,” said Brogg Sterrett, owner and race director for BBSC. “With this addition, we expect to see some of the best talent from around the country taking part on this great course. We have so much in store we can hardly wait another 10 months.”

The day of racing includes three distances: a 750m swim, 20k bike, 5k run sprint race, a 1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run intermediate race, and a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run long course race. Members of registered USAT clubs can earn points toward the Club National Championship by competing in any of the three races.

“This format allows clubs to get all their members involved, from the newbies to the experienced long course athletes,” said USAT National Events Director Jeff Dyrek. “They can all play a part in earning points for their club toward the National Championship.”

The Halfmax National Championship is entering it’s third year and is supported by nearly twenty qualifying events that span the nation. The Halfmax Championship will feature a minimum of 10 slots per age group for Team USAT and the 2009 Long Course Triathlon World Championship. Beginning in 2008, only qualifying athletes will be eligible to compete for the coveted World Championship Slots. Visit www.halfmaxchampionship.com for a complete listing of qualifying events, options and guidelines.

“We are extremely proud and pleased to partner with BBSC Endurance Sports. The new union and move to Las Vegas will exalt the Halfmax Championship concept to the next level,” said Mark Livesay Director of Ultramax Events. “This expansion will amplify the attention surrounding this entirely age-group athlete focused Championship.”

The event will feature live remote cameras strategically placed throughout the course that enable anyone to log onto bbscendurancesports.com to watch their families and friends compete. A roaming film crew will also be capturing the action.

A two-day exposition that includes music, food, and exhibitors from some of triathlon’s most respected names is on the weekend agenda as is an Aquabike (swim, bike) competition.

The 2006 Club Nationals at PumpkinMan had approximately 1,000 athletes registered, making it the largest USAT Club Nationals to date. This year, with the addition of the Halfmax Championship, the numbers are expected to quickly jump to the limit of 1,500 athletes.

All triathlon clubs can also book free space at the expo. Contact race@bbscendurancesports.com for more information.

BBSC Endurance Sports and Ultramax Events are multi-sport race management teams dedicated to organizing, promoting and growing triathlons in Missouri, Nevada and Utah. For more information go to www.bbscendurancesports.com and www.halfmaxchampionship.com.

TRISWIM Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Wash and Lotion

Posted on 08 December 2007 by admin

If you are like me, you dread leaving the pool smelling like chlorine for the rest of the day. When going to bed after a night time swim my wife will often comment about how I smell like the pool. I wish it were the smell of a Calvin Klein fragrance, however, swimmers are often stuck with the chemical smell for at least a few showers. This is not all! My skin is always dry as a bone after leaving the pool. I’m often itchy and irritable from head to toe because of the chlorine (and whatever else is going into the pool).

TriSwim products have solved these problems for me. Since July, I’ve used TriSwim’s body wash, shampoo, conditioner and lotion. These products are designed to relieve the swimmer’s body from the brutal chlorine and replace the chlorine smell with a mild citrus scent.

I highly recommend the products. The days of walking around smelling like chlorine are gone, and I feel like I’m proactively taking care of my body’s exterior. No longer do I smell like the pool and my hair doesn’t feel dead. And best of all, my skin isn’t irritable whenever I stretch, or turn to the side (i.e. any movement). This stuff does its job. I used the four products religiously, and my body has been much happier since.

The days of the public pool damaging my exterior are gone. If you face the same dilemmas I did, give TriSwim a shot. The shampoo, body wash and lotion retail for $10.99. The conditioner retails for 13.95. Visit TriSwim online at www.Tri-Swim.com for retailers.
