Chris Meek emailed his take on the Kokopelli cancellation. See below for his thoughts. We’ll get your prize (as well as the other prizes) out this week. Thanks for your emails!

Although the race was cancelled, Kokopelli was amazing. The wrath of the storm and triathletes overwhelmed the venue. At first it appeared that the pacific force would gift us. A break in the storm teased as clouds to the east broke and allowed sun to spill over waiting athletes–all while taunting storm clouds hung heavy to the west. It was a picturesque moment.
Encouraged by the stay, three waves went off, as the rest of us waited in Sand Hollow’s waters ready to challenge a strong shore bound current swirling from southerly winds. Waiting and wanting, athletes jeered the storm, almost calling it out, as others pushed the race director to let them go. Then it came. The rain. First only a slight sprinkle that quickly turned to darts, creating a heavy spray across the water. Impossible to see its face, the water frothed, almost foaming at the onslaught. Within seconds the final wave for the swim was called amidst heavy protest. To the triathlete, nothing is too challenging. A storm, come on…in our minds we face harsher internal and external environs in training. All begrudgingly moved to the transition area, with what was expected to become a bike/run course. That quickly disappeared under the boom of the storm. What was to be a race became a challenge of several opposing forces that morning: the weather challenging the race, athletes challenging the weather and race director, and a race director challenged by all of the forces that converged against each other on that day. The storm won, and reluctantly, we conceded to the fact that a wise race director cancelled what could have become a regretful and possibly even a tragic day. Sand Hollow already memorializes spirits and wounds from events past. The menacing jaws of the storm beckoned and hungered for more. Even as the MC’s voice sounded, “it is never the wish of a race director to cancel an event” angst and hope could be heard as some questioned whether we could wait it out, give it a go when and if the downpour lessened. In reality, we all knew in our minds that it was for the best…I smiled, as I joined the rest of pack, now racing to our cars to seek shelter from a storm that chided us for even considering to challenge it that morn, at the shores of Sand Hollow.

Best regards,

Chris Meek

Below is Ben Willits’ take on the Kokopelli tri cancellation.

I was a hopeful participant at this last weekends Kokopelli Tri who made it to the water edge before the storms fury set in with full force. The morning started out a little windy with quite a few clouds and a few lighting strikes in the distance. Then, at the beginning of the long course, it seemed to calm down momentarily, but this was just the calm before the storm. As soon as the short course women went off, the rain began to fall and ferocious winds hit the area with a vengeance. The waves in the lake instantly went from moderate to quite large and the rain came down like nobodys business. Upon hearing the cancellation notice, we gathered up our gear and dropped it in the car only to return to the transition area to try and find my sister who was somewhere on the swim course. She had apparently made it about 2/3 of the way through the swim and had come across a long course swimmer who was in trouble. So she slowed up and began to give verbal encouragement to the woman and realized she was in a bit of trouble. She was then able to flag down one of the support boats which promptly scooped them both up and brought them safely to shore. They both shed some tears upon returning to shore and with the realiztion of what had just taken place setting in. It was a disappointment to have the race canceled, but the safety of everyone is the number one priority. It’s not worth getting upset over something that is out of our control. It strengthened mine and many others resolve to train harder and come out firing on all pistons for the next event. Tri-on! — Ben Willits

We’ll have Chris Meeks’ story on of Koko on Thursday.

9/24 - Unfortunately, the Kokopelli Tri was cancelled after three waves had already taken off. A big rain storm hit the area–organizers had to pull riders from the course. Our sources say the rain didn’t stop until 3pm. Share your Kokopelli stories with us and get FREE STUFF. Email what happened to editor@trihive.com.

Sarah Jarvis Race Experience: Quelle Roth Challenge
Roth, Germany, June 24, 2007
My preparations went mostly well until a few weeks before the race, when I got sick, the weather got bad and my bike seat was left in Provo. Luckily on race day the weather was good, I had my bike seat and was feeling not quite as sick. Here is a short race day diary:

3:30 am
I wake up, try to eat as much as I can, try to feel excited for the race

4:30
I wake up Karl, we walk to the swim start, I try to do my usual routine (body marking, bike check, putting on wet suit, warming up) while taking a peek at what the pros like Chris McCormack are doing.

6:10
I go to the start with all the other women (250 out of more than 3000 athletes) and pros, tread water and talk to a woman from DC and one from Venezuela (she had her bike stolen the day before and is therefore only competing in the swim), shed some tears because of the overwhelming atmosphere and thousands of spectators

6:20
Gun goes off, not as crowded and crazy as I expected, I am swimming

6:40
I am still swimming, found someone to draft behind for a while (unfortunately not Macca)

7:00
I am done but I am still swimming (now against the current)

7:21
Yeah, I am exiting the water, glad to move on and really start this race

7:24
All the bars I taped onto the bike fall off as I move it, oops, stuff them into my bike shorts and off I am

7:40
A female pro passes me on the bike, sweet, I beat her in the swim!

8:00
I get a flat! Shoot, I should not have had Karl fix all my flats lately, I don’t even know how to use the CO2 cartridge. I figure it out and off I am again to try to catch all the women that passed me while I was just sitting there.

8:30
I have to pee, dang it!

10:30
I have to pee again

11:30
I am done biking but I have at least 2 more hours. Oh man, what was I thinking?

12:30
What? I have to pee again

1:30
I am finally done! Yeah! I have never been so excited to run and NOT still bike

1:50
I finally get rid of my fuel belt which weighs at least 20 lbs. and start running (more) like a normal person

2:30
I get mad at my friends because they don’t cheer me on the way I want them to. At least being mad gives me something to do!

3:30
I am still creeping along, glad I am not throwing up, having diarrhea, suffering major cramps or having to walk like some people around me

4:30
Now I am peeing for the 4th time during the run, what is wrong with me?

5:20
Even if I have to crawl to the finish, I know I am going to make it, I shed some more tears

5:30
In the finish chute, I grab Noah from Karl and cross the finish line with him

5:32
I am a mom again. Noah and I look at fishes in the pond because Karl can’t figure out how to get through to me to get Noah

Sunday night
I am unable to function

Monday:
I am tired overall but HEY, we are on our way to camp a week in Italy, so who cares?

Tuesday:
What? I am not sore, how did I get to be so lucky? Just my foot is hurting

Wednesday:
I go jogging (NOT running) and (except for my foot) feel pretty good

For those who care:

Swim: 1:02
Bike: 6:00
Run: 4:04
Overall: 11:14

The only way I could make this dream of mine come true was with the help of a lot of people. Thank you so much for your support and help.
It has been amazing!

Well, that is it. Now life is back to normal. Karl and I will both compete next weekend and I am glad I have an excuse because I will probably be really slow.

7/12 - Today we launch a three part audio series with First Endurance Senior VP of Rearch, Rober Kunz. Part 1 will cover nutritional needs for Sprint and Olympic distance events, Part 2 1/2 Iron events and Part 3 Iron distance events. Click here to check out part 1.

We should have it up tomorrow as well as photos from the SG Tri. Subscribe to TriHive ASAP is you want the next issue shipped to your home for free. Go here.

Here is Tiffany’s story:

I participated in the 2007 TriUtah Women of Steel Tri, this was my first triathlon. I have attended many of my husband’s triathlons and am always there from before it starts to the complete end. I love attending these events and am always inspired by the hard work and training that goes into them.

I have wanted to do a triathlon for a while now, but I have always been intimidated by the big races. I was scared of the open water swim and nervous about competing in my first triathlon with so many people. When I heard about the Women of Steel Triathlon, I knew it was perfect. I signed up, trained and completed it. It was awesome!

My experience was one of the best I have ever had. I didn’t feel alone because so many of the other women had never done a tri before, just like me. I was there just to see if I could complete it not to win, just like most of the other women there. All of these factors made me feel comfortable and not as nervous when the race began.

As I was standing in line waiting for my turn to start the swim, I started chatting with this girl behind me, we shared our concerns about doing this for the first time and how nervous we were. I took off on the swim and then completed the bike leg. After almost completing the first lap of the run, I ran into this girl again. We slowed down and walked together and while we power walked, we started chatting about how crazy hard this was and how we were so tired. We talked about our lives and things we were doing. We stayed together the rest of the run and sprinted to the finish together. It was great to have a companion to run with and share this amazing experience with.

Slowing down and walking with someone was something my husband could not relate to very well, but that was what was so special about a women’s only tri.
5/25 - No bites from the ladies. We’ll bring the pink Desoto Trantion Pack back next week. We’ll also have another contest. We’ve got lots of stuff to give away.

Good luck to Sunrise Duathlon racers. We’ll have Travis Snyder, of the Utah Half on TH Radio next week.

See you Tuesday!

5/24 - Troy Martin Wins Day Three!

Like most of us, Troy suffered through the challenging SG Tri run. Below are his comments.

The run at the SGTRI was one of the hardest legs of any race I have ever competed in. The pre-race “briefing” said that 90% of it was “…packed dirt/trail”. Uh…not quite! 90% of the race was 4-6 inches of loose sand. And the hill reminded me of pioneer treks and Rocky Ridge. Throw in the fact that I lost a contact lens on the bike and suffered a hamstring cramp in the swim…didn’t exactly make me excited to start. I decided (for the first time ever) not to run with socks. Do you know what sand in your shoe does to your ankles over a 10k? It’s 5/23 and my ankles are still raw. As I was leaving the transition area after the bike, the announcer called out my friend’s name was just finishing his Sprint. I was just starting a 10k. I could hear Napolean Dynamite saying, “lucky!!”. But, the killer was when one of the aid stations ran out of water. We were told to find a truck “somewhere on the path”. It was great. The only thing I would change would be to re-classify the race as an XTERRA event….just to make it more accurate.

Thanks to Desoto Sports and Wicked Fast Nutrition for the goodies.

TriHive Contest Week - Day Four - We’re going to ramp it up. This is a “women only” contest. How is TriUtah’s Women of Steel Tri different from coed triathlons? Tell us about the vibe of the event including your experiences. Email your response to editor@trihive.com. The winner will receive a pink Desoto Transition Pack. First response wins!
5/23 - Colby Neilson Wins Day Two!

Below is Colby’s description of how triathlon has changed his life.

Let me begin in August of 2004 where I was 275 pounds and depressed. I am 5ft 9in tall and that is not good on my frame. I started to excercise thinking that I could lose a few pounds. My brother in law encouraged me to take up the triathlon scene as he had done and give me something to work towards.
My first triathlon, the SG Tri, in 2005 was huge as I had lost 100 lbs up to that point following a regiment of swimming 2 to 3 times a week, biking, twice a week, and running twice a week. My goal was to finish and that I did. I have since then caught the bug and have completed approx. 30 triathlons since that day. I have also participated in many 5K and 10K road races and the St. George Marathon twice. I am happy, healthy, and my mind is alive again!!! Needless to say, I have my life back. My life is forever changed!

Thanks to Desoto Sports and Wicked Fast Nutrition of the goodies. Yesterday’s winner, Ryan Conger will be sent some Desoto toe warmers and EnergEase.

TriHive Contest Week - Day Three - How hard was the run at SG Tri? Briefly share you expience running through the sand, up the nasty hill. Do you think the run wasn’t hard and triathletes need to buck up? Tell us why? The first response will receive some great gear! We still have Desoto arm warmers, toe warmers, socks, Recover Ease and EnergEase to give away!!! Email your response to editor@trihive.com.
5/22 - Ryan Conger is the winner of our Monday contest of TriHive’s Contest Week. Ryan emailed his improvements over the 06 and 07 SG Tri. Below are the results and his thoughts on the improvement.

Ryan Conger says….

06 Results
Swim, 21:31.08 T1, 7:36.32 Bike, 50:04.22, T2 1:41.52 Run, 39:21.51
Total, 2:00:14.55

For 07 they are as follows
Swim, 16:57 T1, 2:45 Bike, 40:10 T2, 1:39 Run, Run, 28:35 Total, 1:30.03

“I was really pleased with the performance this year at SGTRI. I was excited to do it, mostly because this was my first triathlon ever last year, and I wanted to see how far I had come in the last 12 months. I actually followed a training plan this year to prepare for this race. I followed an Olympic plan thinking that it would help me out with the sprint that much better. Last year, I couldn’t function after the race, this year, I felt great! What a difference a year of focused training makes. Next year, I hope to carve another 15 to 20 minutes off my time. Is it possible? We will see in a year!”

Thanks Ryan! We’ll contact you regarding your prizes today.

TriHive Contest Week - Day Two - How has triathlon changed your life? The first person to email editor@trihive.com with a brief summary of how the sport has changed their life will win some good stuff. Share where your life was before this change and where you are now.

5/21 - Debbie Perry won the second annual Women of Steel Triathlon on Saturday. Nearly 400 women participated in the event. Click here to view our scrapbook of the ladies in action. Click here for complete results. Loydene Berg was hailed the race’s Woman of Steel. Loydene’s best friend nominated her because her husband was a victim of the Chevy’s restaurant shooting about seven years ago.
