Blas Elias is an unassuming triathlete. His long hair would lead you to believe he was the drummer in a metal band. If you thought this, you are correct. Blas’ fame came from drumming with the metal band, Slaughter, whose early 90s hits “Up All Night” and “Fly to the Angels” gave the band world wide fame. The band spent years on the road, opening for KISS and Ozzy Osbourne, and even performed on late night TV. The Las Vegas based rocker played for thousands of adoring fans nightly.
Running is a hobby Blas kept through the lengthy Slaughter tours. He’d often begin his day with a morning run to explore the city he was performing in. Blas would occasionally recruit musicians from other bands on the tour. However, the “sex, drugs, and rock and roll” lifestyle tended to keep some friends from frequent running, saying that he would witness friends committing to kicking drug habits to begin running with him, only to relapse a short time later. Blas seemed to defy habits of the rockers.
Blas’ running prowess can be seen in his results. In 2004 Soma Triathlon, a Half Iron (70.3) event, Blas capped off an average run and swim (46:44 & 2:47:00 respectively) with a smoking 1 hour 34 minute run, recording the 28th fastest run of the day (out of over 600 triathletes). He says that he paced off of 1997 Ironman World Champion, Heather Fuhr to guide him to such a fast run.
These days, Blas drums for the Las Vegas production of Blue Man Group. He rides his bike to the Venetian, where Blue Man Group performs nightly, and sneaks in a training session in between sound check and performance. He’s even recruited other Blue Man Group performers to train with him.
